John Williams

Suicide.

John Williams, residing in this place, came to his death this morning from the effects of strychnine, which he procured at the Drug Store of S. R. Bryant. The circumstances connected with this melancholy affair, as near as we can learn, both from hearsay and the verdict of the Coroner's Jury, are about as follows: -- The cause which led him to seek self-destruction, appears to have been a family quarrel, at the termination of which he left his residence, went direct to the Drug Store of Mr. Bryant, and inquired for a poison, (naming it) with which, he said, he wished to kill wolves, and inquired at the same time what quantity would be necessary for that purpose, &c. After the druggist telling him that he did not know, Williams asked for ten grains, which was furnished him, and for which he paid. During this conversation he appeared to be perfectly calm and collected. He then returned to his residence, mixed the poison in a glass which contained some liquor, and , after first inviting his wife, and her father and mother to drink with him, and upon their refusing, he said he would drink by himself, and accordingly swallowed the contents of the glass. He then went to a neighboring house, and in a few moments afterwards, died.
