William K. Talbot

Death of Rev. Wm. K. Talbot.
Rev. William K. Talbot, well known to some of the older citizens of Valparaiso, died at Woodhull, Ill., on the 7th of November 1880, aged 81 years, 3 months and 20 days.

He was born in Massachusetts, June 17, 1799, and was educated at Andover and Princeton. His first charge was at Nottingham West, Mass; from this he went to Dunstable, and afterwards to Parishville, N. Y. In 1835 her removed to Laporte, Ind., and in 1844 to Andover, Ill. In addition to missionary work he fostered the cause of education, and was chiefly instrumental in founding the university of Iowa at Iowa City. From 1850 to 1854, he was pastor at Oquawka, Ill., and after this a missionary in Arkansas, Kentucky and Tennessee. At the breaking out of the rebellion his loyalty involved him in great danger, and at Columbus, Ky., he was dragged out of bed, and only escaped shooting by the intervention of friends. His fidelity to his country secured him a chaplaincy chiefly through the efforts of C. O. Waters of Chicago, and from 1862 till 1865 he held this office at Columbus, Ky., and at Beaufort, S. C. Herein the faithful charge of his duties and while attending a soldier's funeral, he received sunstroke, from the effects of which he never recovered. His power of consecutive thought was permanently impaired, and pulpit work made almost impossible. Returning to Andover he lived there till 1872, when he removed to Woodhull, where he resided till his death. Brother Talbot's heart was much interested in the various works of the church.

He was twice married; first to Miss Mary Pryorat Northfield, Mass., in 1826; afterwards to Miss Francina Ann McConnell, of Valparaiso, who, with three children, survives to mourn his loss.
