Benjamin Stoddard

Memorial of Mr. Stoddard.

I am sad and lonely to-day; I go from room to room, and all is sadness, all is gloom. The plants on my table, the mountain fern by my window, seem to have lost their fragrance. They bow their heads as though saying, "Where are the tender hands that once cared for us?" I look across the prairie to the old red farm house where the dear ones lived and loved so many years; where the night bird sang its tuneful lay; but now they have all passed away. The angel of death has taken our dear Uncle Stoddard away; has folded his form in its cold embrace, and he now lays sleeping beneath the snows of winter. Oh how this little brown house will miss him, and many other homes far and near. But a few days since he came with outstretched hands and pleasant smiles as he always came to meet those whom he loved, the rich, the poor, all alike, strewing flowers all along life's journey. Oh how hard to part with the loved who has been in our circle so many years! How many times I've heard him repeat, "Should the Lord call me to-day I am ready;" this world is not my home; we are all hastening to the tomb. Oh let us have our lamps trimmed an burning; then we will be enabled to wear the crown with our dear Uncle Stoddard which lies at the end of the race, in the paradise of God.

A MOURNER.
