Christopher Steckert

STECKERT FOUND.
The Whereabouts of the Missing Man No Longer a Mystery.

The body of Chris. Stockert who disappeared very mysteriously three weeks ago, was found in a marsh near Michigan City, on the 4th inst. The body was lying in a wet muddy place and presented a very disagreeable appearance. It was lifted on a stretcher, then into the wagon and brought to the city. The pockets of the clothing were searched and among the articles found was a small silver watch, which had stopped at 12 o'clock, a pocket book containing a five cent piece and some keys. The body was stripped and it was seen that it was considerable decomposed. The feet and legs were in worse condition than the rest of the body. The eyes were badly sunken, and the face presented a horrible appearance. The body at once prepared for burial. It is the general supposition that Steckert died of exposure. He was last seen on the night of his disappearance about 10:30 o'clock. It is believed that instead of crossing the harbor to go to his home Stecker followed along up the north side of it, crossed the railroad, got into the march, fell down, and in a state of intoxication lay there and went to sleep. It rained during the night and it is supposed if he ever aroused that he was too weak from exposure to get up and had to die where he lay. There are a few who believe that he might possibly have been decoyed to this marsh and murdered, but his body bears no marks of violence and there is no evidence apparent that he met with foul play.
