Benjamin N. Spencer

They are Passing Away.

Within a short period very many of the old pioneers of Porter county who have lived beyond their three score years and ten, have laid their armor by and passed on.

The names of David Oakes, T. A. E. Campbell, Wilson Malone, Joseph Bartholomew, John Wolfe, James Dye, Ruel Starr, Abraham Stoner, and others who have recently left us, were for more than forty years so initimately connected with the interest, prosperity, and welfare of Porter coutny, that by her citizens they will never be forgotten.

One name prominent among them, and which will be held in grateful memory by the early settlers of Porter county, is that of Benjamin N. Spencer. In 1834 he emigrated to Porter county; his generous nature, liberal and honorable course toward his fellow men, soon won for him their confidence and esteem. During his stay with us he was favored with places of honor and responsbility. Under the old constitution he was elected associate judge of our county court. He represented his constituents in the legislature of the state having always their confidence as to his honesty and capability. In 18-- he removed to Lovonia, Minnesota, where he remained until he was called away. Having lived a long, eventful and successful life, at the age of 74 years, on the 24th day of March, 1881, he drew his cloak about him and gently passed away.

Of his surviving children only one remains in Porter county, the wife of our honored townsman, Henry Stoddard. With them we join in deepest sympathy for the separation from a loving and devoted father.

Now comes the question where has he gone, or shall we ever meet him. Skeptics may not decide, and atheists cannot tell, but how consoling is the abiding faith that when this mortal shall have put on immortality in God's own time that well known and welcome voice we shall hear.
