Umphrey Shoureegh

Another Death by Strong Drink!

Another death has occurred at Calumet by strong drink. An Irishman by the name of Umphrey Shoureegh was found dead on Wednesday morning, 25th instant, at Young's Grocery at Calumet Station, having come to his death, as the Jury found, by a "convulsionary fit," -- which we understand means some kind of drunken fit. This is only another illustration of the legititate effects of intoxicating liquors taken as a beverage.

The friends of the deceased man watched over his corpse a few hours, during which $28 were expended which were found in his pocket, and a bill has now been sent to the Auditor's Office for the County Board to pay, for necessaries furnished on the occasion, amounting to over $40, among the items of which are the following:

4 lbs. Tobacco, - - - $1.50
5 doz. Pipes, - - - $0.72
3 gals. Brandy, - - - $9.00
2 gals. Wine, - - - $6.00
and one day's board of ten men at $1 each day, - - - $10.00

Fellow Citizens: will you not set your faces like steel against a system of laws which tolerate such things? Will you not go for a simple prohibition of the business which is the legitimate cause of such doings and consequences?

[Note: Calumet and Calumet Station are former names of Chesterton.]
