Edward Ruberry

Chesterton Chips.
The remains of Edward Ruberry were brought here from Chicago Sunday last, and laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery. The family lived here about twenty five years ago, and other members are buried here. Edward Ruberry committed suicide by hanging himself with a handkerchief, while an inmate of the Cook county jail, on the evening of November 23. He had eaten a hearty supper an hour before, and seemed in the best of spirits. On the 17th inst., he had delivered himself up to the authorities, confessing to the shooting of Frank Scanlan in a saloon at 2500 Weller avenue a few hours previously. He said he first went home and sent to bed, but after trying in vain to sleep he decided to give himself up. His hearing was set for Nov. 27. He was taken to jail as he was unable to give bonds. He lived at 99 Twenty-fifth place. Ruberry was 35 years old, and was well known here. He is the third suicide in the history of the Cook county jail, Louis Lingg, the anarchist, being the first, who blew his head off with a bomb, and the other was a man who trying to escape from his guard, jumped from the third story gallery, and was dashed to pieces on the corridor below. Ruberry accomplished his purpose by means of a pocket handkerchief, which he tore in strips, tied around his neck, and attached to a hook five feet from the floor.
