Martin Phares was born in Green county, Ohio, May 16, 1816, and died therefore 65 years, 9 months and 5 days old. When he was about 20 years old he moved with his father's family to Union county, Ohio. Here he was married, October 24th, 1837, to Maria Shafer. In the fall of 1841, with wife and two children, he moved to the site of the present homestead in Porter county, Indiana. In all there were born twelve children, two of whom died in infancy, and of whom eight are now living. Mr. Phares was one of the early settlers of Porter county and has borne his share of the toils and hardships of a pioneer life, and has raised up a large family of children who have grown up to manhood and womanhood, and are much respected in the vicinity where they live. In the death of Mr. Phares his wife has lost a kind and affectionate husband, and his children an affectionate and loving father, and community an honorable and industrious citizen. The funeral services were conducted by Eld. L.
