TAPS SOUNDED FOR ANOTHER WAR VETERAN
(From Monday's Daily)

With the passing of Horace B. Miller, whose life came to a close just before 10 o'clock this morning, three veterans of the civil war lay dead in the city at the same time. The other were C. H. Parker, Sr., and Joseph Anderson, whose bodies awaited the funeral services. Mr. Miller followed in the wake of Jacob Fisher, Chaplain Brown post commander, whose place he was elected to fill a week ago Saturday night, just after he suffered the stroke that resulted in death today. "Will you take this office after I have finished with it?" Mr. Fisher is reported to have asked of Mr. Miller. "I will," was the reply.

Mr. Miller's whole life was one of friendship with his fellowman. He knew no enemies. His going will be regretted by hundreds, and he will be missed around the courthouse, where he was bailiff for twenty-four years. He was a member of Porter lodge No. 128, A. G. & A. M., of this city, and of the Royal Arch chapter.

Mr. Miller was born on Horse Prairie, south of this city, and went to Iowa with the family before the civil war broke out. There he enlisted with a company of calvary when he was a mere boy. At his death he was only 68 years old. After he was mustered out he returned to Valparaiso and followed the painter's trade here. When Heber Stoddard became sheriff here twenty-four years ago he appointed Mr. Miller his bailiff, and after this appointment came under the jurisdiction of the circuit court he retained the place. For years he was the bailiff of both the superior and circuit courts, but when the new Porter circuit court was created here by an act of the legislature, confliction of the two court terms necessitated two bailiffs, and since then Mr. Miller had acted solely for the superior court.

When the veteran was selected by Chaplain Brown post to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Jacob Fisher, the same day that his last illness began, his case was not considered serious. But other strokes followed and installation never took place.

Mr. Miller is survived by Mrs. Miller and two children, Ed Miller and Miss Clara Miller, both residents here, besides four brothers -- H. W. Miller of this city, and Emery, Levi and Sylvester, all of Iowa. The latter was here at his brother's bedside. Mr. Miller's sisters are Mrs. Maria Cameron, Vinton, Ia.; Mrs. Phoebe Brant, Port Orchard, Wash., and Mrs. Jane Abbott, Hillsdale, Ore.
