Hamilton Paine

Hamilton Paine died at his residence in South Chesterton, of dropsy, aged 80 years. The funeral was held Oct. 14, and the remains buried on the Paine farm at Coburg. On account of the serious illness of his sister the funeral services have been postponed. Deceased moved to Chesterton from Coburg a year ago, and bought the Schuyler Williams place. His sister kept house for him. Since he came here he has been an invalid. Deceased was a son of Arahel and Fanny J. Paine, and grandson of Gen. Edward Paine (a revolutionary soldier) and the founder of Painesville, Lake county, Ohio, where Hamilton was born on Oct. 22, 1813. He removed with the family to the wilds of Northern Indiana, and in the spring of 1834 helped build the first log cabin ever built in Jackson township, Porter county. As a citizen, he was honest, sober and industrious, always for the protection of America and American industries, and the equality of all men before the law.
