Charles Wesley Newland

OBITUARY.
Charles Wesley Newland, son of Rev. James H. Newland, M. D., was born in Montgomery county, Indiana, Oct. 20, 1855, and died at his father's residence in Valparaiso, Indiana, Jan. 7, 1877. He was raised in the lap of the church, and in his boyhood voluntarily assumed the duties of membership in the Methodist Episcopal church, of which he continued a member until his death. His membership was not merely nominal, he was truly and evangelically converted, and was in full sympathy with the spiritual mission and work of the church; and, until his affliction prevented him, was regular and prompt in attending upon the means of grace, and was, for his age, an active worker in the church. With him religion was a solemn verity, and he did not compromise any of its claims with the world. Gifted with a bright clear mind, polished by culture, and chastened and sanctified by religion, he found the sweets of his quiet home his most congenial resort; and in that home his spirit spread light and cheer. He found no pleasures in the rough adventures of the street, his companions were books, and the members of the household whose society he never wearied. His spirits seemed too pure for this rough world, and the Savior whom he loved has taken him, leaving a bad vacancy in that circle already greatly reduced in number. Charles was always frail in physical constitution, and a few months ago it became apparent that pulmonary consumption had marked him as a victim. But he was not unprepared for his charge. Besides his pure life, which is the best test of christian character, he had unfaltering trust in Christ as his Savior; and among his last expressions he said, "I am trusting in Jesus!"
