John Clinton Needham

Obituary.
John Clinton Needham, whose death was briefly announced in last week's ENTERPRISE, was born in Niles, Mich., December 29, 1852, and died in Mishawaka, Ind., May 24th, 1883, in the 30th year of his age. He was a printer by trade, having learned the art in the office of the Valparaiso Vidette. From Valparaiso he went to Indianapolis, to accept a position on the Christian Advocate, and later went to South Bend, where he was employed on the Register. From there he went to Sparta, Wis., where for a time he published the Wisconsin Greenback. After a short experience in the publishing business he went to Warsaw, this State, where he began the study of law in the office of Judge Grazer & Son. He made rapid progress in this profession, and was admitted to the bar of Kosciusko county. Being of a most genial and gentlemanly disposition he made many friends, and seemed on the high road to distinction and success when the dread disease, consumption, set its seal upon him and blighted all his fair prospects. He was compelled, about eight months since, to abandon his practice and go to Northern Minnesota, in hopes of benefitting his health. The change, however, did not seem to benefit him, and he came to the home of his parents here, subsequently going back to Warsaw; but returning at last to Mishawaka, in February last, where his devoted mother and brothers could care for him during his rapidly declining days.

"Clint," as he was familiarly known by a large circle of friends, was a young man of more than ordinary promise -- a dutiful son, a kind friend, and a good citizen. His untimely death is a loss to the community as as to his friends.

The funeral services were held at the M. E. church on Sunday afternoon last, at 2:30 o'clock. The attendance was large, a number of friends and relatives being present from abroad. Rev. C. E. Bacon officiated, and delivered a very appropriate sermon on the occasion.
