Fred Michael

TUESDAY
Miss Matilda Michael, of Chicago, daughter of Fred Michael, Esq., near Chesterton last week deceased, was here on yesterday to get advice about what interest if any Mr. Michael's children have in his estate. She says that nearly 20 years ago her parents were divorced, and she supposes by the treachery of her mother's lawyers property belonging to her mother was awarded to her father and her mother sent away unjustly stript of property and other rights. Her father's second marriage, Miss Matilda says, soon made his house no fit home for his children, and they all have since lived elsewhere. When she got a letter from her brother Fred, of Chesterton, information about her father's death, she hastened to his house, but reaching it at 3 a. m., she says, was not allowed to enter, the objection being that the hour was unquestionable. At the funeral however she and Fred both were allowed to see the corpse. This lady makes a fair impression and enlists one's sympathy, but probably her statement, honest as it seems and doubtless is, is only one side of a case, and her exemption of her father from all blame must go far to afford presumption that his 2d wife, and 3d wife, sister of the 2d, and this 3d wife's children, members of decedent's family, must all be worthy of a charitable judgment.
