Rebecca McPherson

DEATHS
REBECCA McPHERSON.

Died, on Saturday, September 2, 1899, Rebecca, wife of John McPherson, at her home near Morgan's school house, after a short illness, the result of old age. The funeral services were held Sunday at the house, and on Monday the remains were taken to Union Mills for interment.

Rebecca McPherson, nee Morgan, was born in Holma county, Ohio, May 5, 1828. She was the daughter of Jesse and Jane Morgan, and one of a family of ten children, only three surviving her, John G. and J. C. Morgan, of Chesterton, and Eleanor Baker, of Michigan. She moved with her parents to Indiana in 1829, and lived in Elkhart and Laporte counties until 1833, when the family came to this county. Here she grew in pioneer life to womanhood.

Aug. 9, 1849, she was married to John McPherson, of Union Mills. Shortly after their marriage they moved to South Bend where they resided for two years. They then moved to Arkansas and settled near Little Rock. Moved from there to Washington county, Ark., in 1853, and lived there until the civil war broke out. Not being of southern sentiments they had to flee from there to Fort Scott, Kansas.

While her husband went as a soldier to defend the flag of his country, she was left in destitute circumstances to provide for the welfare of the family. They lived here for several years, and then moved to Cass county, Michigan, and from there to Berrien county. Here they resided for several years, and then moved to Porter county, where they have since lived. At the time of her death, she lived a few steps from the spot where her father some sixty-seven years ago had built a camp, then having no neighbors but the Indians.

She was patient and loving all through her life, showing a great amount of fortitude during her long suffering. She was the loving mother of five children, one daughter only, surviving her.
