John McAuliffe

McAULIFFE. -- On Thursday morning, Dec. 14, 1876, Mr. John McAuliffe departed this life at his residence, near Valparaiso, in the 70th year of his age.

"May his soul rest in peace."

The estimation in which Mr. McAuliffe was held by his friends and neighbors was plainly expressed by the large procession that followed his honored remains to the grave, through the intense cold and severe weather of last Friday morning.

In our age and times, when worldly ambition and the self interest of middle life, so often crushes out the honest principles received in youth and innocence, the death of such a man as John McAuliffe is a loss that extends itself far beyond the circle of his humble home and afflicted family. He was one of those rare men, who never sacrificed his honest principles, however small the sacrifice or great the consideration, for any advantage or emolument the world could bestow. Through his long life a pure conscience was to him of more value than pure gold.

He was an unpretending good Catholic, and hance, a good father, a good citizen, and an honest man. He left his family but a moderate share of the world's goods, but he left them that for which he was always far more solicitous, a good name, unblemished by a single act of which his children might feel ashamed. Mr. McAuliffe was born in Meelan, county of Cork, Ireland, and immigrated to this country in 1847. He first settled in Vermont, from thence he moved to Ohio, and at length in 1857 came to this place.

Since he came to America he was engaged chiefly as foreman over the hands in the building of new railroads; and should this notice come under the eye of any of the many men who ever served under the good-natured rule of "Uncle John," they will no doubt remember the old man with kindness, and bestow on him the last boon of a Christian friend, a prayer to Almighty God, for the heavenly peace of his immortal soul.
