Andrew Johnson

Another Victim of Lake Michigan.
Monday of this week a sailing vessel bound for Chicago, loaded with coal, sprang a leak, and her condition became so serious that she was run shoreward. At a point near the county line between Porter and Lake, the owner, Andrew Johnson, the mate, steward and a sailor started for shore in a small boat to find a telegraph office and send for a life-saving crew. The lake was very rough, and the boat capsized. Johnson was swept away by the waves, but the other three men managed to cling to the overturned boat, and after two hours reached shore. They found their way to Dune Park, but were so benumbed by cold they could not talk for some time. After getting warm they returned to the lake, and found Johnson's body lying on the beach. The vessel, with its crew, reached South Chicago in safety.

Coroner Ketcham held an inquest over the remains of the dead man Tuesday, and on Wednesday Undertaker Lundberg brought the body to Chesterton. As soon as news of the disaster reached Chicago the dead man's wife sent a searching party out from the city. They reached Chesterton Thursday morning and took the body to Chicago for burial.

Johnson was a man about 40 years old, in good circumstances, married, and a Swede. He seldom went on his ships and it was only an accident that he was on board this trip. Had he remained on board he would have been saved.
