Anne Howe

From the Herald.]
DIED.
HOWE. -- On Sunday morning, May the 7th, 1882 Mrs. John Howe, aged 56 years.

Mrs. Howe, maiden name Anne Gallagher, was a native of the county Leitrim, Ireland. While yet but a young girl she left her home for America in 1846. She landed in Canada, but soon after came to the states. In 1850 she was married in New Buffalo, Mich., to John Howe. After marriage they removed to Michigan City, from whence they came to Valparaiso in 1853, being the first Irish family to permanently settle here. In fact, it may be said, that they were the pioneer Irish and Catholic family of Valparaiso, for Mrs. Howe's house was the only one for a long time at which the Catholic priests who came here occasionally to say Mass could stop. Two sons were born to her, one of whom was killed by the cars some time since, and from the shock then sustained by her, she never seemed to rally. Her health had been failing for several years, and for the last eight weeks she was confined to her bed. On Sunday morning she passed off quietly, fortified by all the rites of the Catholic Church. Mrs. Howe was a good, kind, and affectionate woman, highly esteemed by all her neighbors and acquaintances, respected alike for her unobstrusive modest qualities and simple womanly virtues. The funeral, which was a very large and respectable one, occurred Tuesday. The burial services took place in St. Paul's Church. High Mass was celebrated for the repose of the departed soul, after which Father O'Reilly preached the funeral sermon paying a deserved tribute to the memory of the deceased. Her remains were laid in St. Paul's Cemetery their final resting place.
