Howard

CHESTERTON CHIPS
Engineer Howard of the Lake Shore road, was found dead beside his engine at Pine Thursday evening of last week. The cause of death is a mystery. He had sidetracked his train to allow a passenger train to pass, and had gone out on the running board of his engine to oil up. After the passenger train had passed, the fireman and conductor found him lying on the ground dead, with a big gash on his head. The theory of murder was advanced, but investigation reveals no clew in that direction. It is believed now that he was either struck by a chunk of coal falling from the flying train, or had an attack of heart trouble, and received his wound when striking on a rail. Howard was well known on the road, and well liked. He lived in Elkhart and was a man of family.
