Hogan

At the request of Mr. T. A. Hogan of this village, we publish the following lines which were written upon the occasion of the recent death of his mother at Laporte:

The Death of my Mother.

Death came -- she looked upon my face and smiled -- that smile I've seen before. -- Ah, it was the smile of death!

Each breath I counted as the last,
I felt it grow trembling and weak,
Her cold hand still held me fast,
Her cold lips were on my cheek.

Her dying language breathed my name,
And her last pillow was my breast,
I blest her till the angel came
And bore her spirit to the blest.

Before the stern decree I bow,
Ordered in Heaven all-wise,
She's linked with angels now I know,
Why should my mourning heart so grieve?

I wear the ring she wore when blest,
I wear the ring she wore when dying,
I wear the ring she wore when dead --
I'll wear it to my grave.
