Cheney Herr

Cheney Herr Drowned!

Our village was thrown into a state of excitement this forenoon by the startling news that Cheney, son of Mr. J. Herr, of this place, and aged about 12 years, was drowned in Axe's mill pond, 3-4ths of a miles south-east of town. He and others were picking berries in the vicinity, and he resolved to go into the pond. In doing so he stepped off a steep place into deep water, and, being no swimmer, drowned before efficient help could be obtained. Mr. Axe and Mr. Sherman, who were somewhere near at the time, reached the place as soon as possible and rescued him from the water, but too late. -- He was lifeless, cold and past resuscitation. Numerous relatives mourn, and the entire community sympathise with them in their sad and sudden bereavement.
