Hammer

McCOOL, Ind. -- Car Inspector Hammer was instantly killed at this place last Thursday by an engine on the E. & J. road. The accident occurred right at the station. Hammer was walking on the E. & J. track with a crowd of hand car man, as an E. & J. engine and caboose came along. The men stepped off the track for the engine, but after it had gone by, Hammer was lying on the ground bruised and mangled, and gasping his last. The remains were taken to Joliet Friday for burial. The Coroner held an inquest, in which a verdict of accidental death was rendered. Deceased was highly respected here, and was a great Sunday school worker. He was 36 years old, and unmarried.
