Cordelia Durand

DIED.
Died at the residence of her parent on the 23d of January, 1882, Miss Cordelia Durand, aged 13 years, 8 months.

Hush! Tread the carpet softly,
The doot-fall of angels sound
Through the echoless air of that room of prayer,
And circles of dying sound.

A daughter of tender yearning,
A child's living heart,
Has drifted away to the gates of day
From the home of her hope apart.

And bending in grief unspoken
Is the friend of her girlish love.
O, linger, ye listen'ng angels,
And let her whisper a word of praise for them.

Gone from a home love guarded,
Adorned by a careful hand;
With gifts of love, that will lingering prove,
Her worth from a severed band.

Fold the still hands gently,
Close the white lids in rest;
Lay the fair flowers that in life's glade hours,
She loved so well, on her silent breast.

Dear schoolmate, we bid you a loving
And last farewell.
Our tears still drop, on the lonely spot,
Where the dead in silence lay.
