Stella Cissna

DEATHS
Miss Stella Cissna, a well known and popular teacher of this place, departed this life at the home of her parents, near New Carlisle, Friday Dec. 18, at 3:45 p. m., after a lingering illness of nearly two years of consumption. Deceased was born Dec. 12, 1871, near Fort Scott, Kansas, and with her parents moved to Laporte county several years ago, locating near New Carlisle. She taught school in Laporte county four years, after which she accepted a position in the Chesterton public school which she retained until ill health compelled her to resign. A year ago last June she went to Oklahoma in the hopes of improving her health, but failing, returned, and in September of that year she went to California, remaining there until the following June. From that time on she has gradually declined, until the end came, which put a period to her bright young life.

Miss Cissna was the oldest of seven children born to Martin and Ella Cissna, and was the comfort of her parents. During her stay in Chesterton she won the hearts of our people, and her death is keenly mourned. The funeral was held Monday Dec. 21, services being conducted in the M. E. church of New Carlisle, Rev. Kramer officiating, assisted by Rev. Tinkham, and the remains laid to rest in the New Carlisle cemetery, by a large concourse of mourning relatives and friends.

On her death bed Miss Cissna called to her physician and asked him how long she had to live. When he told her but a short time, she sent for the family pastor, who prayed with her. Ten minutes after she laid on the pillow, closed her eyes as if in sleep, and silently her spirit left its casket to go to its heavenly reward, without the slightest struggle. She was prepared for death and calmly awaited its coming.
