Cassidy

Thursday morning a terrible accident happened on the Michigan Central railroad at the crossing of the B. & O. about a half a mile west of Crisman. The 5 o'clock passenger train was the victim. At this crossing, the companies have inter-locking switches. The engineer was given the signal to come on and the target man turned the switch for it, but in doing so the chain which moves the switch broke, the rails flew back, and the target kept its place. The train was thundering on at a rpaid rate of speed, and just before reaching the fatal spot, Engineer Cassidy saw his danger. By jumping he could have saved his life, but he stuck to his post, reveresed his engine, and went down with the wreck. The engine, baggage car, and one first-class coach and one sleeper were overturned. Engineer Cassidy fell under the wreck and received injuries which resulted in his death a few hours afterwards. The fireman, who at the time was on the tender, was severely injured. His name is Cross, and it is reported that his home is in Furnessville. Engineer Cassidy lived in Michigan City, and was a prominent member of the Brotherhood of locomotive engineers. None of the passengers was hurt. Wrecking trains worked all day Tuesday clearing away the wreck. The cause of the disaster was the breaking of the chain, and no one is to blame.
