Burge

A disease prevails in the neighborhood of Flint Lake, 3 miles north of here, with scattering cases elsewhere, supposed by some to be Varioloid. It seems to have been brought from Chicago or elsewhere west, by Mr. R. Keene. A child of his and one of Mr. Burge's died with it, and quite recently a young Mr. Ketchum. Mr. Geo. Farrington, near this town, had it and recovered. Many have been exposed, and we believe it is admitted on all hands to be rather contagious. Whatever the disease may be, therefore, and notwithstanding there is no cause for alarm, yet it must be proper to guard against needless exposure.

[Note: Varioloid is a mild form of smallpox occurring in people who have been previously vaccinated or who have had the disease. - American Heritage Dictionary]
