Ibie Louise Brakeman

M usic that charms the finite ear,
R ichly attuned
S hall we not hear?

I n vain! Nor comes thy voice of cheer
B reathed sweetly on the air,
I mpalpably we deem thee near,
E scaped from death's fell snare.

L inger we at thy silent bed,
O 'er which we fain must weep!
U nseen, art thou, with noiseless tread,
I n presence here, a watch to keep?
S ent as a guardian, dost thou wait
E mpowered to guide to heaven's gate?

B ut "faith" that gives a clearer sight
R eveals the home above,
A nd shedding forth a glorious light,
K ept shining by God's love,
E ver illuming the "straight road" --
M ade a path to regions fair,
A nd a "highway" to the bright abode --
"N ight never enters there."

G ladly thy spirit sought the light
O f an eternal day,
N or darksome cloud, nor shadowy night
E ver obscured the way!

H appy immortal, ever blest!
O ur eyes made clear, can trace
'M id the fair palaces of rest
E ntranced thy smiling face.
