William A. Bliss

DIED.
BLISS. -- Wm. A. Bliss died January 1, 1862, aged 75 years, 2 months and 27 days.

He left two sons, both worthy men, Wm. Bliss, of Jackson, Porter county, Indiana, and Horace Bliss, of Steel City, Nebraska. Brother Bliss was soundly converted in early manhood, and joined the Methodist Episcopal church, and was a member over forty-five years. We became acquainted in 1843 or 1844. His house was one of my pleasant homes, when on Steuben circuit, Indiana, where friendship grew up which lasted till he closed his eyes on earth, and I trust will be renewed the blessed feature. It was his request that I should attend his funeral, which was January 13, in Jackson township, Porter county, Indiana. Theme -- Prov. 14, 26. "In the fear of the Lord is strong confidence; and His children shall have a place of refuge." Fear is used with two shades of meaning. First, that which views the past with remorse, and the future with dread. Second, that reverences God, submits to His will, and obeys His commandments. This, Brother Bliss had, and so had strong confidence. "Blessed is the man that feareth always." "His children shall have a place of refuge." He was a child of God by faith in Jesus Christ, hence had "a place of refuge," in the provisions and promises of the gospel, "My God shall supply all your need, accordingly to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus." And finally a "place of refuge," in that "eternal house above not made with hands." For, "If children, then heirs, heirs of God, and joint heirs with Jesus Christ." What more can I say? Reader, are you an "heir of God?" If not, why? Peace to the memory of my dear old friend. Amen.

W. J. FORBES.
