Elias Axe

Uncle Elias Axe, one of the pioneers of Porter county, died at his home in this city on Saturday morning of erysipelas. He was born in Virginia in 1819, and came to Indiana in 1836, locating in this city, and residing here and in this vicinity since then. Mr. Axe was connected with the business interests of the city for many years, and watched its growth from the time there was only one house boarded up to the present time. He founded the Christian church in 1857, and served continuously as an elder and treasurer until two years ago, when he resigned because of failing health. July 6, 1847, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Pennock; one daughter, Mrs. Nora Dickey, of LaFayette, was the result of the union. In December, 1854, he married Phoebe White, of White settlement, who survives him. The result of the union being Mrs. H. B. Brown. Mr. and Mrs. Axe adopted Elmer White when he was an infant. The funeral, one of the largest ever held in this city, was held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock, at the Christian Tabernacle. The pastor, Rev. J. V. Smith, officiating.
