The Carter Cemetery is located at 400 East and 700 North in the southeast
quarter of the southwest quarter of the southwest quarter of Section 27. The cemetery is
relatively small and located on the east side of 400 East. Several tombstones
are located at the top of the hill, and the cemetery grounds extend back to a
fence line. The cemetery is generally well maintained and contains numerous old
tombstones.
According to the 1876 plat map for Jackson Township, Philo Carter owned the land
surrounding the Carter Cemetery and the Carter School was located just north of
the cemetery.

Newspaper items concerning the Carter Cemetery include the following:
ANIMALS DIG BONES FROM GRAVE IN CEMETERY
(From Monday's Daily)
According to reports brought to this city yesterday afternoon an unknown animal
has been causing havoc in the Carter cemetery by digging bones of remains buried
there and bringing them to the surface. Saturday when certain parties went into
the burial ground they found the bones of a little girl who had been buried
there on the top of the grave, and a long slanting hole made downward by the
animal showed the method by which it had been accomplished.
Even parts of the coffin were on top of the grave, and the matter is being laid
before the authorities. Action will be taken at once to stop the work of the
mysterious animal. Two other graves had been bothered, but with these latter two
the animal had not been so successful in its operations.
Sunday morning it was found that the animal had been working again Saturday
night. Another hole had been started.

JACKSON CENTER
Chas. Anderson, of Burdick found eight holes dug in the Carter cemetery and
most of them dug in the graves. From some of them bones and parts of the
caskets were thrown out. He put poison in the holes and closed them up, in
hopes of suffocating the animal.
