The Burstrom Cemetery is located at 1700 West Oak Hill Road in Porter, Indiana
[southeast quarter of the southwest quarter of the northwest quarter of Section
27]. The former small village of Baillytown was located just west of the
cemetery. The vast majority of individuals interred in the Burstrom Cemetery are
of Swedish descent, including numerous Swedish immigrants. Hence, the cemetery
is occasionally referred to as the Old Swedish Cemetery. The cemetery is
privately owned and operated.
Although the Burstrom Cemetery was founded in 1870, it does not appear on
Westchester Township plat maps until 1906. The cemetery was read by F. J. Hassmer in October 1943 and updated by Lee Stasierowski for the Northwest
Indiana Genealogical Society in 1994.
